Snow guards and snow stops are two names for the same thing: small guards fastened to the roof in rows above the eaves. They catch the snow and hold it in place while it melts.
A snow fence does the same job with one continuous bar along the roof. C&S Rain Gutters installs all three.
A roof full of snow can let go all at once, usually on a sunny afternoon. The whole sheet hits the gutter on its way off. That can bend the gutter, pull the hangers loose or tear a run off the fascia. It can also land on whoever is underneath, on a deck or a walkway, or on a parked car.
Northern Colorado winters make this common. Snow melts in the afternoon sun and refreezes overnight, which turns it heavy and icy. If sliding snow has already bent or loosened your gutters, see gutter repair.
Metal roofs most of all. Snow slides off metal much more easily than off shingles, and it often goes in one piece.

No, and it is worth knowing before you buy. Snow guards stop snow sliding. An ice dam is a different problem: snowmelt refreezes at the cold roof edge and builds a ridge of ice that traps water behind it. The answer to that water is heat cable, which keeps a channel open so it can drain.

Before the snow comes, on a dry roof. Fitting guards on a roof covered in snow or ice is slow and risky work.
If your gutters are full of leaves, book gutter cleaning at the same visit. Leaves left in a gutter freeze solid over winter and give ice something to build on.
